Female breadwinners show off know-how at cooking festival
TEHRAN – A festival dedicated to the local food of eastern Iran was held in the historical core of Birjand, South Khorasan province on Thursday, a local tourism official has said.
The one-day event aimed at supporting female breadwinners by providing them a market for their home-based products, Mohammad-Ali Jannatifar explained on Saturday.
The festival also aimed at introducing and promoting the city’s historical core as a tourist destination, he noted.

Experts believe that food tourism has become one of the most dynamic and creative segments of tourism and, at the same time, has naturally positioned itself as an element of diversification of tourism with a high impact on the promotion of sustainable development at the regional and local levels.
In 2020, Iran joined an online campaign launched by the UNWTO to promote gastronomy as an essential part of tourism. Iranian cuisine, usually dominated by fragrant herbs, varies from region to region. It principally accentuates freshness, deliciousness, and colorfulness.
South Khorasan is home to many historical and natural attractions, such as Birjand Castle, Dragon Cave, Furg Citadel, and Polond Desert. It is also known for its famous rugs as well as its saffron and barberry, which are produced in almost all parts of the province.
